Parts 1 and 2 of this series examined UVa alums in Major League Baseball and Major League Lacrosse. Today we'll check in on former Cavaliers plying their trade in the NBA.
Sean Singletary (Detroit Pistons): Singletary was the model of stability at UVa, staying four years and becoming one of the all-time great Cavaliers. Since being drafted 42nd overall by the Sacramento Kings in 2008, he's gone completely to the other end of the spectrum. Singletary never played a game for the Kings; he was traded to the Houston Rockets two months after the draft, and then traded again before the season began to the Phoenix Suns. After appearing in 13 games in a Suns uniform, Singletary was traded for the third time in a year, this time to the Charlotte Bobcats, where he played in 23 games before being assigned to the NBDL.
Singletary currently has no contract with any NBA team, but did play on the NBA Summer League roster of the Detroit Pistons as a backup point guard. He averaged 7.4 points and 3.6 assists per game over five games. The invitation to the summer league was clearly an audition: the Pistons are looking for a third point guard, and Singletary's athleticism could be just what Pistons' GM Joe Dumars is looking for.
Roger Mason, Jr. (San Antonio Spurs): If Singletary needs a little cheering up after all that bouncing around the league, Mason can act as an inspirational story. Also drafted in the second round, Mason spent a year and a half with the Chicago Bulls and half a season with the Toronto Raptors before drifting overseas to play in Greece and then Israel. Returning the US, he spent two seasons coming off the bench for the Washington Wizards, but finally found his groove this past season with the Spurs. As a regular starter for the first time in his NBA career, Mason set career highs in just about everything and was fourth on the team in scoring with 11.8 points per game. He also gained some good publicity by making a habit out of hitting late-game three-pointers for last-minute victories.
